UConn Pre-College Summer Program Staff: Cody

Cody Olson

Hi there! My name is Cody Olson (he/him), and I am the Pre-College Summer Residence Director. I’m from central Pennsylvania, but I am pursuing a masters in higher education and student affairs here at the University of Connecticut. I have been working with the professional staff throughout the year to prepare for your arrival this summer, and I couldn’t be happier with the residential staff we have selected to work with you. You can learn more about each of them below. These are the folks who will be your main point of contact throughout the program, so getting to know a little about them before you arrive is a great idea. We are so excited to see you this summer!

Graduate Assistant

Nicole Hyman

I’m Nicole Hyman (she/her), and I am so excited to be a part of the PCS team this summer! I graduated from Furman University with a BA in Political Science and Sociology in May of 2018, and just completed a year-long term of service with AmeriCorps at College Forward in Austin, TX. I will be entering my first semester of graduate school in the UConn Higher Education and Student Affairs program in the fall. I love to try new things and get outside of my comfort zone, whether it is trying new foods, traveling to new places, or anything in between. A fun fact about me is that I was recently in a competition to make a playlist ranking Taylor Swift’s top 50 best songs!

Residential Counselor for Student Welfare

Haley McDonald

My name is Haley McDonald, and I will be the Residential Counselor for Student Welfare this summer. I just finished my first year of graduate school at the UConn School of Social Work, where I am pursuing a Master’s in Social Work with a concentration in Individuals, Groups, and Families Practice. I am a proud Blue Hen Alumni from the University of Delaware, where I graduated with degrees in Sociology and Human Services last year. I love to travel; some of my favorite places I’ve been are Israel, Nicaragua, and Paris. A few items on my bucket list are to see the Northern Lights in Iceland, go to the Ellen Show, and swim with dolphins. A fun fact about me is that I once slept through two earthquakes! I can’t wait to have a wonderful summer with the Pre-College Summer program!

Hall Coordinators

Rachel Trotman

Hello! My name is Rachel Trotman and I will be a Hall Coordinator this summer. I just graduated from UConn’s Neag School of Education in May with a masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction. I love science, music, and pretty much everything else! This will be my third summer working with the Pre-College Summer program, as I’ve been a residential counselor for the past two years. I’m so excited to meet everyone, and I can’t wait for another great summer!

Andrew Oravecz

My name is Andrew Oravecz; I’ll be working as a Hall Coordinator this summer. I graduated from UConn in 2015 with a double major in Political Science and Human Rights. I am currently a graduate student pursuing a Master of Public Policy (MPP) degree, concentrating on social policy. In my free time, you can find me searching for unique coffee shops and scouting out the best public basketball courts throughout Connecticut. I’m passionate about social justice, community service, and learning about diverse solutions to society’s most difficult challenges.

Mar Amador

Hey Everyone! My name is Mar and I use they/them/theirs pronouns. I am a rising senior majoring in HDFS here at UConn. I will be a Resident Manager for Pre-College Summer; I am so excited! In my free time I like draw, play video games, study French and ASL and play ukulele. (I certainly need to work on the last two more.) A fun fact about me is that I once earned a free trip to California by agreeing to go skydiving. I’d love to tell you the story sometime! I can’t wait to meet all of you and have an awesome summer together!

Dan Barrack

My name is Dan Barrack and I am very excited to be a Resident Manager this summer. I graduated from UConn in May 2019 with a Bachelor’s degree in Molecular and Cell Biology and will be starting at UConn Law this coming fall. UConn has been a very special place for me since I was a little kid coming to campus for basketball games and Dairy Bar ice cream and I look forward to sharing my combined passions for this university and for learning with the Pre-College Summer participants. In my free time I love to go hiking and have a goal of one day climbing to the high point of all 50 states! I also enjoy traveling and rooting for my favorite sports teams. I am so grateful for the opportunity to work with the Pre-College Summer Program and am sure it will be a valuable experience for everyone involved.

Nicey Brooks

My name is Nicey Brooks, and I will be a Resident Manager this summer. I am a rising junior at UConn pursuing a degree in Nursing. I love writing poetry and in high school I was in the writer’s club, and I took a performance poetry class this past spring semester to get in touch with my stage presence again. A fun fact about me is that I’m a self taught hair stylist! I can’t wait to be a part of the Pre-College Summer staff this year!

Thomas Costello

My name is Thomas Costello, and I will be a Resident Manager this summer. I am a Chemistry major and I am going into my senior year here at the University of Connecticut. My favorite food is chicken fajitas and my favorite dessert is moose tracks ice cream. I also have a pet dog named Toby. He’s a cattle dog/lab mix. In addition, I absolutely love sports, both watching and playing. My favorite memory at UConn so far has been spring weekend the past two years, specifically getting to play Oozeball. I’m incredibly excited and can’t wait to be a Resident Manager for PCS this summer!

Jia Cai

Hello! This is Jia Cai and you can find me as one of the Resident Managers this summer. I am currently a rising super senior pursuing a degree in Music Performance with a concentration in Percussion. I am trilingual and I also know three different computer programming languages. I love cooking (find me and I’ll show you my foodsta!), ice skating, swimming, and knitting. Shiba Inu is absolutely my favorite dog breed. I’ve also learned the basics of almost all instruments during my first two years of music school. I am extremely excited to get to know all of you this summer!

Luis Gonzalez

Hey! My name is Luis Gonzalez, and I will be a new Resident Manager this summer! I am a rising sophomore here at UConn double-majoring in Sociology and Communications. I love to play a friendly competition of volleyball, which I have been playing for five years and counting. I also love to try new foods and traveling with friends on road trips. My favorite thing about UConn is the various cultural centers we have here on campus and definitely the Dairy Bar! And a fun fact about me is that I used to have two pet turtles! I look forward to working with everyone for this year’s Pre-College Summer!

Julia Marchese

Hi all! My name is Julia Marchese and I will be a Resident Manager this summer. I will be a second-year Masters student this Fall, pursuing my degree in Latina/o and Latin American Studies with a research focus in Latino/a education. I grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio and attended college at Kent State where I majored in Spanish. Most of my free time is spent singing, playing the piano, cooking new recipes for my friends, traveling, and listening to podcasts and music. I’m super excited to begin research for my Masters thesis at UConn in the Fall! As part of my project, I’m trying to teach myself Maya K’iche, an indigenous Guatemalan language. I’m looking forward to PCS and can’t wait to meet everyone!

Sarah Mongillo

My name is Sarah Mongillo and I will be a Resident Manager this summer for the Pre-College Summer program. I am so excited to come back to UConn after working for a year! I graduated from UConn in 2018 with a degree in Urban and Community Studies and Spanish and would like to eventually pursue a Masters in Higher Education. I am currently living in the south of Spain as an English teacher! I love nature, being active, food, reading, and music. A fun fact about me is that I have Ordinal-Linguistic Personification, where my mind associates numbers with personalities (ask me about it). Also, challenge me to a game of tic-tac-toe if you dare.

Kara Newell

My name is Kara Newell and I will be a resident manager this summer. I just graduated from UConn (woohoo) with a major in psychology with a concentration in research and a minor in neuroscience. I am very excited to start Law School at Quinnipiac School of Law next year. My favorite experience at UConn has been watching the sunset on Horsebarn Hill with dairy bar ice cream. A fun fact about me is this is my second Summer spent working at UConn. I’m so grateful and excited to be a part of the Pre-College Summer staff this year!

Louvins Pierre

My name is Louvins Pierre and I will be a Resident Manager this summer with the Pre-College program. I am a 2nd year Masters student in Communication, with a focus in Marketing Communication. This May, I went to Washington DC where I got to network with various Communication professionals around the world for the International Communication Association 69th annual conference. My most enjoyable part of UConn is meeting individuals from different places around the world and states. I now have friends from South Korea, Greece, India, Italy, China, and many states around the U.S. A fun fact about me is that I love to watch anime in my free time (Japanese animation). I am excited for a great summer with you all!

Jessica Wang

Hi! My name is Jessica Wang, and I will be a Resident Manager this summer. I am a rising sophomore at the University of Connecticut, and I am majoring in Secondary Education Mathematics with a concentration in Mathematics. A fun fact about me is that I went to the Great Wall of China, and it was so much fun, but also tiring having to walk up all those stairs. I like to play volleyball, hang out with friends, watch Netflix, and travel. I am so excited to be a part of the Pre-College Summer staff this year, and I can’t wait for this summer!
